Learning Intention:
Students will:
Understand the Biblical account of the Story of Creation from Genesis
Understand that the world was created by God in all its wonder.
Go outside and wonder with a family member about creation.
Students name objects from nature that they like,
and say how it feels,
how it looks and why they like it.
You may also take photos of your child while they are engaged in this activity.
I wonder…….
Why do we have a night and a day sky?
What the wind feels like in your hair?
What animals do you like best?
What is your favourite place?
How were the mountains and sea created?
Who could have made all this?
Watch the Story of Creation, or read the Bible story Genesis 1:1-31,

Activities
- Students collect objects from nature (plants, seeds, gumnuts, pebbles, feathers, leaves, flowers) to decorate the prayer place and discuss their significance.
- Make your own Creation Mini Book.
- Create the night sky using the crayon resist technique (students draw with crayons or pastels then wash over work with black paint).
- Playdough Creations – let the children play with Playdough – encourage them to “create” things with the Playdough – talk to them as they are creating and try to get them to name the items they are “creating”.
- Science Experiment: God created the sky to separate the water from below and above. The sky is air. Can air hold up water?
Scrunch or crumple up a piece of paper.
Push the paper into the bottom of the glass so that it cannot fall out.
Turn the glass upside down and plunge it straight down into the bowl of water
What happens to the paper? It stayed up inside of the glass, didn’t it?
That’s the power of air. It held up this paper, just like it holds up the water in the sky.
How this works is that the air inside the glass takes up space.
The paper stays dry because the water can only get into the glass by squashing the air inside it.
Air can be squashed, or compressed, a little,
but then it pushes back and prevents the water from reaching the paper.
- Dramatisation: “God said,”
Bring out a large dish and water. Pour water into the dish.
“Let dry ground appear.”
Bring out a large rock and place it in the middle of the dish.
Show the children how the water is separated
“Let the land produce plants.”
Bring out some plants and flowers and place them on the side of the dish.
“And let there be trees on the land that grow fruit with seeds in it.
Bring out an apple and cut it in half to show the seeds
- Provide materials and opportunities for students to create their own natural and made-worlds using figures, natural objects and blocks that reflect their experiences of natural and built environments.
- Engage in water play to enable students to explore the awesome phenomena of water. (E.g. making bubbles, rainbows, seedpod boats, playing with water droplets under the electronic microscope).
- Provide materials and opportunities for students to explore the phenomena of wind through play (e.g. paper airplanes, kites, cloud watching, pinwheels).
- Using masks, materials, costumes children enact characters from or parts of the Creation Story.
- Using puppets and stuffed toys, students play games and enact the Creation Story
- Play with music and sound effects and respond through dance and song to the awe and wonder of God’s creation.
- Make a list of all of the birds and animals in the waters that you can think of. There are hundreds more that we didn’t think of. This just shows us the vast, huge, mind of God. He actually thought of all of these animals and made them all different in some way. Create your own animal for the water or for the sky.
- Make and play the Creation Boardgame
- Retell the Creation Story using the Creation Story Posters, the Storyboard, the Story Sequence or the Creation Story in Numbers
- Plant a seed to care for (sunflower seeds grow quickly, but any will do)
“The Seed”
In the heart of a seed buried deep so deep
A dear little plant lay fast asleep.
“Wake,” said the sun, “and creep to the light.”
“Wake,” said the voice of the rain drops bright.
The little plant woke and rose to see
What a wonderful world outside might be.
It lifted its face up to the sky And said,
“What a happy little plant am I”
Amen
Reflection:
Students write a simple prayer of praise using sentence starters, e.g. God of creation, how wonderful you are:
− You created ...
− You made ...
− You gave us ...
− You provide ...
− You show your love for us by ...
Students paste the leaves or flowers on their published prayer to create a prayer card
